What We Do
Any action that could impact a community’s natural or cultural resources—land, water, air, scenic views, historic sites, or quality of life—is almost certain to provoke public and media interest. A lack of information or misinformation spread by others can result in costly delays or even rejection of a proposed project or program. We believe that fire prevention provides greater value than fire fighting. We take the following approach to successfully manage issues communication:
Coordination
Work as part of a team that coordinates our talents with those of other disciplines, including project management, engineering, legal, regulatory affairs and lobbying.
Situation Analysis
Verify perceived issues, identify potential opponents and allies and evaluate the resources available to produce the desired results.
Communications Assessment
Evaluate existing and potential communications, including frequency, credibility and accessibility to the targeted audiences.
Strategic Planning
Develop a detailed plan that includes creation of consistent and credible messages, target audiences, action plan, media and materials, milestones and desired outcomes.
Media Relations
Employ traditional and new media to communicate key messages, counter misinformation and build your organization’s reputation. This will include:
- Building relationships with reporters and editors
- Media and spokesperson training
- Writing and producing communications materials
- Monitoring all media
Public Affairs
Address potential barriers that could develop within the local political environment or the permitting processes. This may include:
- Grassroots and opinion leader outreach
- Drafting and delivering testimony, presentations and proposals
- Monitoring governmental and regulatory policies and actions
